Moon lander pictured on its side with snapped leg

The first clear images of the Odysseus robot on the surface of the Moon have just been released. They include a view of the American mission lying to one side, having broken a leg on touchdown. The spacecraft continued to work afterwards, however, sending back data about the lunar environment. Odysseus made history last Thursday by becoming the first ever privately built vehicle to complete a soft landing on the Moon. And despite the awkward orientation it eventually adopted, the robot should be celebrated, said US space agency administrator Bill Nelson. Nasa had contracted the operating company, Houston-based Intuitive Machines, to carry six scientific instruments on board the lander. "Odysseus is a success," the agency chief told reporters. "We are in the sixth day of what was planned as an eight-day mission, and we're still receiving data from those instruments."

Chicago on tornado watch as cold front moves in

Severe storms have brought tornado warning to the Chicago area as a cold front pounds through the US Midwest. The National Weather Service has reported at least five tornado sightings, including three near the city of DeKalb, around 64 miles (102km) west of Chicago. Wind gusts in excess of 60mph were reported, knocking down trees and light poles and leaving much of the area without power. There are no reports of casualties. Experts say an El Nino weather pattern and climate change are at play. Cities across the US and Canada reached record February temperatures this week, experiencing summer-like heat. In Chicago, many people were out and about enjoying the unusual weather, as temperatures quickly plunged into deep winter chills. The NWS described Chicago's weather pattern as seeing summer, spring, autumn and winter all "crammed into the next 24 hours". It described the swing as "absolutely brutal". Numerous incoming and departing flights at Chicago's O'...

Protest vote over Gaza is election warning Biden cannot ignore

Michigan voters have sent a clear warning to the White House that Joe Biden's support for Israel's war in Gaza could cost him dearly in the presidential election in November. Activists encouraged people voting in Tuesday's Democratic primary to withhold their votes from President Biden and instead mark the box marked "uncommitted" as a protest. More than 100,000 voters did just that. The protest vote - while a sharp rebuke - poses no immediate danger to Mr Biden, who still won the contest with 81% of the vote. He's the incumbent president and has no serious challenger from within his party, so he can't lose the race to choose the Democratic candidate. But what if all the people who withheld their support from him this time don't come out to vote for him in the general election? That could be decisive. Every vote counts in a key swing state that the US president almost certainly needs to win to have a shot at a second term. In 2016, for example, Hillary...

McConnell to quit as Senate Republican leader

Mitch McConnell, the powerful politician from Kentucky, announced that he plans to step down as the Senate's longest-serving Republican leader in November. He has served as leader for nearly 20 years, but said it was "time to move on" in a speech on Wednesday. Mr McConnell has proven key to passing conservative priorities and electing Republicans to Capitol Hill. He fell out of favour with Donald Trump's wing in recent years, however. In his speech, Mr McConnell reflected on his long career, his age - 82 - and his family. He dedicated a large portion of his speech, however, to the importance of US global leadership despite the ideological shift his party has undergone under former President Donald Trump's isolationist rhetoric. "I know the politics within my party at this particular moment in time. I have many faults, but misunderstanding politics is not one," he said. "That said, I believe more strongly than ever that America's global leadersh...

Alabama's legislature pushes to protect IVF

Republicans in Alabama will introduce a bill designed to protect access to IVF treatment, after a court ruling cast doubt on its availability. The state's top court ruled earlier this month that frozen embryos have the same rights as children and people can be held liable for destroying them. While it did not ban or restrict IVF, it created a legal headache for clinics and some pulled their services. The bill is expected to be introduced in the Alabama Senate on Tuesday. Republicans hold a majority in the chamber and Senator Tim Melson, who is putting forward the bill, said he was confident "reasonable minds" would come together to pass it. Mr Melson, who is also a doctor, told the BBC that the issue became his priority after "a lot of people came into my office in Montgomery and explained that this is the only option they have for a family and it's in jeopardy". "We need to make sure that clinics are not put in jeopardy for manslaughter, or some crimi...

Sean Combs accused of sexual assault by producer

Sean Combs has been sued by a music producer who has accused him of sexual assault and being forced to have sex with sex workers. Rodney "Lil Rod" Jones alleges he was a victim of unsolicited groping and sexual touching while he was working for the rapper on his latest album. This is the fifth law suit with sexual assault allegations against Mr Combs. Responding to the lawsuit filed in a New York court, a lawyer for the artist said it was "pure fiction". Mr Combs' attorney, Shawn Holley, added: "We have overwhelming, indisputable proof that his claims are complete lies. "We will address these outlandish allegations in court and take all appropriate action against those who make them." According to court documents, the music producer lived and travelled with Mr Combs between September 2022 and November 2023. His lawyers say he was drugged and "recalls waking up naked, dizzy, and confused. He was in bed with two sex workers and Mr Combs"....

Elon Musk eats humble pie over unpaid bakery bill

Elon Musk has stepped in to foot the bill for 4,000 mini pies after his firm cancelled an order at the last minute. Giving Pies bakery in San Jose was left $2,000 (£1,500) out of pocket when Tesla backed out just before delivery. But when the small business took to social media to complain, Mr Musk said he would stump up the dough. He even had Tesla place a new order - but the bakery said it was now so flooded with business from well-wishers it was too busy to take it on. "It's incredible, I'm blown away," Voahangy Rasetarinera, the owner of the California bakery, told NBC. "I'm so grateful, it's amazing, people are amazing." Her response came after Mr Musk took to social media to resolve the dispute. "Just hearing about this," he said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, responding to a local news story about Tesla cancelling the order. "Will make things good with the bakery. People should always be able to count on Tesla trying its bes...

Israel is ready to pause its war in Gaza during Ramadan if a hostage deal is reached, Biden says

U.S. President Joe Biden signaled that a cease-fire in Gaza could be at hand, saying that Israel has agreed to pause its offensive during the upcoming Muslim holy month of Ramadan if a deal is reached to release some hostages held by Hamas. But both Israel and Hamas downplayed on Tuesday the idea that a breakthrough was imminent. In the wake of Hamas’ attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, Israel’s air, sea and ground campaign in Gaza has killed tens of thousands of people, obliterated large swaths of the urban landscape, displaced 80% of the battered enclave’s population and sparked concerns that a famine could be imminent, according to the United Nations. Now, the prospect of an invasion of Rafah has prompted global alarm over the fate of civilians trapped there.

Israel Gaza: Biden hopes for ceasefire by next week

US President Joe Biden says he hopes to have a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza by Monday. His comments come amid reports of some progress in indirect negotiations involving Israeli and Hamas officials. It would involve aid deliveries to Gaza and the release of more hostages taken during the 7 October Hamas attacks. Israel has not commented and Hamas officials have indicated the two sides are not as close to a ceasefire deal as Mr Biden suggested. Qatar, which has been mediating in the talks alongside Egypt, said they were "pushing hard" for a deal and felt "optimistic", but had nothing to announce. Israel launched a large-scale air and ground campaign in Gaza after Hamas gunmen killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel. The attackers also took 253 people hostage, a number of whom have since been released. The Hamas-run health ministry in the Gaza Strip says at least 29,878 people have been killed in the territory since then - including 96 d...

US couple on hijacked boat feared killed

A US couple whose boat was hijacked in the Caribbean last week likely died after being thrown into the sea, according to police in Grenada. Ralph Hendry, 66 and his wife Kathy Brandel, 71, both pensioners, have been missing since their catamaran was taken by three men on 19 February. Police believe the suspects, who escaped from jail the day before, were attempting to head to St Vincent and the Grenadines. All three have been found and arrested. "We have nothing conclusive to say that the individuals are dead," Mr McKenzie added. "We still hold out hope that in spite [of] what might be a low probability, that they would turn up alive somewhere." Mr McKenzie added that the information that can be shared with the public is "quite limited" and that the investigation by Grenadian and Vincentian authorities remains ongoing. According to the Salty Dawg Sailing Association - of which the missing couple was a member - Mr Hendry and Ms Brandel were "veteran cr...

New York school eliminates tuition after $1bn gift

A New York City medical school will offer students free tuition following a $1bn donation from the 93-year-old widow of a major Wall Street investor. The gift to Albert Einstein College of Medicine came from Dr Ruth Gottesman, a former professor at the Bronx school. It is one of the largest ever donations made to a US school and is the largest ever made to a medical school. The Bronx, New York City's poorest borough, is ranked as the unhealthiest of New York's 62 counties. In a statement, university dean Dr Yaron Yomer said that the "transformational" gift "radically revolutionises our ability to continue attracting students who are committed to our mission, not just those who can afford it". Tuition at the school is nearly $59,000 each year, leaving students with substantial debt. The statement from Einstein noted students in their final year will be reimbursed for their spring 2024 tuition, and from August, all students, including those who are currently ...

The Last of Us star condemns homophobic hate

The Last of Us actor Nick Offerman has used an awards speech to condemn the "homophobic hate" he has received from viewers, over his character. At Sunday's Independent Spirit Awards, Offerman won best supporting performance in a new scripted series, for playing Bill in the TV drama. Bill and his partner, Frank, are among the survivors of a fungal brain infection in the hit HBO show. Offerman thanked HBO for "having the guts" to tell such stories. He added they were "stories with guts, that when homophobic hate comes my way and says, 'Why did you have to make it a gay story?', we say, 'Because you ask questions like that - it's not a gay story, it's a love story.'" He was nominated alongside Murray Bartlett, who played Frank; while Bella Ramsey was up for best lead performance, for playing Ellie. Their co-star Keivonn Montreal Woodard won the award for best breakthrough performance, for playing Sam. Netflix's Beef also won t...

Actress and director Amy Schumer has revealed she has Cushing's Syndrome, caused by having steroid injections in high doses. She revealed the condition after being swarmed by comments about her face, with fans saying it looked "puffier" during recent TV interviews. In her initial response, Schumer attributed the change in her appearance to endometriosis. The subsequent Cushing's diagnosis left her feeling "reborn", she said. "There are a few types of Cushing. 'Fewer children will be born': Alabama embryo ruling divides devout Christians

When Alabama's Supreme Court defined frozen embryos as children, the shock and confusion was immediate. Major hospitals pulled fertility services and would-be parents scrambled for clarity on what would happen next. The debate over reproductive rights in America has long been driven, in part, by opposition to abortion from Christian groups - but this ruling has divided that movement and ignited debate about the role of theology in US lawmaking. Margaret Boyce is soft-spoken, a private person, and certainly not - in her words - a "crier". She had been taking fertility drugs for 10 months and was days away from her first appointment for in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) when the justices of Alabama's top court upended her life. Their ruling, which prompted many fertility clinics to pause their work, has left her turning to the Bible daily for comfort.

Trump easily wins South Carolina but Haley fights on

Nearly two dozen allies flanked Mr Trump during his victory speech Flanked at his podium on the Columbia state fairgrounds by nearly two dozen allies, including most of the state's political leaders, he told a raucous crowd: "This was a little sooner than we anticipated." Mr Trump certainly has much to boast about with this win. Exit polling conducted by the BBC's US partner, CBS News, shows that the ex-president bested Ms Haley with both men and women, and among all age groups. Lauding them for their support, Mr Trump, 77, reminded his audience: "We have a lot of work ahead of us." But it does not seem he will be able to fully turn his attention to the general election just yet. Ms Haley re-committed to staying in the race until at least Super Tuesday - 5 March - when voters in 16 states will cast their ballots on the same day. "I'm a woman of my word," the former UN ambassador said. "We're headed to Michigan tomorrow, and we're h...

International Mother Language Day

International Mother Language Day is a UNESCO proclaimed day, which is celebrated all over the world to preserve and promote all the languages of the world. UNESCO picked the day February 21 as the International Mother Language Day to commemorate the event of the famous Language Movement in Bangladesh in 1952, where many people sacrificed their lives for the right of speaking their own mother language Bangla. Here, the residents of Arizona speak in many different languages, even though English is the common language medium for communication. We have been celebrating IMLD in Arizona to promote all those different languages on this very special event as a Language Festival for almost a decade now. Mayors of different Arizona cities, Arizona House and other Government offices are proclaiming the day as International Mother Language Day like every year. Some of the dignitaries will be joining to enjoy the event. Many of you are very much familiar of this event and had participated in ...

Growing concern in Bangladesh as Myanmar conflict intensifies, causing major uptick in people fleeing towards the border

Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, February 23, 2024  IRC teams on the ground in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, are reporting growing numbers of people arriving at the Myanmar border as conflict continues to push people out of their hometowns. With over 2.8 million people internally displaced in Myanmar - 660,000 of whom have been displaced in the last four months - the humanitarian crisis in the region is likely to worsen at an alarming pace.  Despite the Bangladesh government refusing to accept any more refugees, citing the large numbers they have been hosting for over six years, the IRC is monitoring the situation and preparing to scale up our refugee response inside Cox’s Bazar refugee camp, should this decision change. Already, Cox’s Bazar is home to one million Rohingya refugees who fled persecution in August 2017. Since then, they have remained trapped in inadequate living conditions, including overcrowding and poorly built shelters prone to flooding or catching fire. This week, ...

Trump calls on Alabama to protect IVF treatment

Donald Trump has said he supports the availability of IVF treatment, joining a growing number of Republicans seeking to distance themselves from an Alabama court ruling on the issue. The state's top court ruled last week that frozen embryos have the same rights as children and people can be held liable for destroying them. At least three clinics paused IVF treatment in the wake of the ruling. On Friday, Mr Trump called on lawmakers to find "an immediate solution". "We want to make it easier for mothers and fathers to have babies, not harder! That includes supporting the availability of fertility treatments like IVF in every State in America," the former president wrote on his Truth Social platform.

That encounter last February caused a diplomatic crisis between Washington and Beijing.

Tyler Perry halts $800m studio build over AI fears

US film and TV giant Tyler Perry says he's putting a $800m (£630m) expansion of his studio on hold after becoming concerned over new AI technology. He was due to add 12 sound stages to his Atlanta complex, but says he has been put off by the release of OpenAI's video generator Sora. Lionel Messi Went Viral for Hilariously Dribbling Right Over an Injured Opponent

Lionel Messi started his second season in MLS with a bang on Wednesday night as Inter Miami cruised to a 2–0 win over Real Salt Lake.  Messi assisted on the first Miami goal of the night, playing Robert Taylor in perfectly behind the back line with a quick and accurate pass. He also played a key role in the second goal, with a long run leading to a pass to Luis Suárez, who found Taylor for the finish.  Once again, Messi was head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch. It often feels like he’s toying with his opponents, and never more so than on this one play in Wednesday night’s game, when Messi flicked the ball over the body of an injured opponent who was laying on the ground.  The play didn’t result in a goal, but it was as memorable as anything Messi did that night. It was a humorously creative play by Messi, but also really impressive. Not only did he have the presence of mind to attempt the flick over the defender’s prone body, he flicked it over the opponent...

Rust armourer on trial after Alec Baldwin shot cinematographer

Meanwhile, Benavidez is constantly checking on Halyna’s condition. Canadian man gets life for killing Muslim family

A Canadian man who killed four members of a Muslim family was sentenced to life in prison as a judge ruled that his actions amounted to "white nationalist" terrorism. Nathaniel Veltman, 22, was given five life sentences - four for murder and one for attempted murder. Veltman was found guilty by a jury in November. He ran down the family with his truck in 2021 while they were walking in London, Ontario. Salman Afzaal, 46, and his wife Madiha Salman, 44, were killed by Veltman when he struck them with his truck. Their daughter Yumna Afzaal, 15, and Mr Afzaal's 74-year-old mother, Talat Afzaal, also died in the attack. The couple's nine-year-old son was seriously injured.

Second Alabama clinic pauses IVF treatments

Medical providers and fertility patients in Alabama have been left in uncertainty after a court ruled that frozen embryos are considered children. At least three fertility facilities have since paused new IVF treatments over concerns of "legal risk". "There is an emotional side to this, and I don't think the law should be based on those emotions," one Alabama mother said. The ruling opens up a new front in the US battle over reproductive medicine. It is not yet clear what the impact might be in other parts of the country. The Alabama Supreme Court ruling, which came down on Friday, was prompted by three couples who filed a case after their embryos were accidentally destroyed in an incident in 2020. A patient wandered into the part of a fertility clinic where the embryos being stored, handled them, and accidentally dropped them. The ruling did not ban or restrict IVF and in fact, the couples who brought the case actively sought out the procedure. But experts say ...

Road accidents kill 1,600 in Afghanistan in 10 months

KABUL, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Road accidents have claimed the lives of more than 1,600 commuters and left over 4,000 injured in the past ten months in Afghanistan, said Abdul Wodud Khair Khwa, head of plans and policies at the General Directorate of Traffic Police. "Around 3,045 traffic accidents took place across the country which killed and injured a large number of people in the past ten months," the local television channel Tolonews quoted Khair Khwa on Thursday as saying. Citing the official, the private media outlet added that "more than 1,600 commuters including 976 men, 192 women and 447 children" lost their lives in the deadly road crashes over the period. Dilapidated roads, reckless driving and lack of safety measures for travelers on congested highways are the main reason for the road mishaps in war-torn Afghanistan. According to the official, the General Directorate of Traffic Police has been making efforts to reduce road accidents across the cities and hi...

Iran sends Russia hundreds of ballistic missiles, sources say

Iran has provided Russia with a large number of powerful surface-to-surface ballistic missiles, six sources told Reuters, deepening the military cooperation between the two US-sanctioned countries. Iran's provision of around 400 missiles includes many from the Fateh-110 family of short-range ballistic weapons, such as the Zolfaghar, three Iranian sources said. This road-mobile missile is capable of striking targets at a distance of between 300 and 700 km (186 and 435 miles), experts say. Iran's defence ministry and the Revolutionary Guards - an elite force that oversees Iran's ballistic missile programme - declined to comment. Russia's defence ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The shipments began in early January after a deal was finalised in meetings late last year between Iranian and Russian military and security officials that took place in Tehran and Moscow, one of the Iranian sources said. Shehbaz Sharif to be Pakistan PM and Asif Ali Zardari President. What it means for India

Shehbaz Sharif is all set to return as the Prime Minister and Asif Ali Zardari as the President of Pakistan after the two old-guard parties, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), reached a power-sharing agreement. The announcement comes after a nearly two-week-long political deadlock in the country following the February 8 elections, which resulted in a hung assembly with no party securing the 133 seats mandated for a simple majority out of 265 contested seats in the Pakistan National Assembly. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz won 79 seats while the Pakistan Peoples Party came third with 54 seats. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) has also agreed to support the coalition with their 17 seats. The new government in Pakistan is faced with challenges in handling the country's economic crisis and security issues. In 2023, Pakistan averted a default when the International Monetary Fund provided a $3 billion short-term loan. Then there...

Celebrating and revitalising heritage languages

To celebrate UNESCO’s International Mother Language Day, the NSW Department of Education is highlighting programs we offer to keep languages alive. Since 1999, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has designated February 21 as International Mother Language Day to celebrate students’ universal right to study their heritage languages. The day traces its origin to 21 February 1952 when five Bangladeshi students were shot dead for breaking a curfew to protest their right to speak Bangla, their mother tongue. Under relentless pressure following the shootings, the Pakistan Government (which governed the region that became Bangladesh) recognised Bangla as an official language in 1956. To coincide with this year’s celebration of International Mother Language Day, a new global think-tank of heritage language academics and practitioners will launch a global call to action for the preservation and revitalisation of heritage language education for multiling...

FBI launches probe into church investigated by BBC

The FBI has launched a probe into a secretive Christian church that was the focus of a recent BBC investigation. The church has no official name but is often referred to as The Truth or the Two by Twos. The sect has recently been rocked by a sexual abuse scandal, with the names of hundreds of alleged perpetrators given to a hotline set up for survivors. An ex-minister who abused a boy in the 1980s told the BBC he had "no reason" to be concerned about the FBI probe. More than a game: How chess is helping prisoners in Canada

While chess may seem like just a board game to some, it is now being used in prison systems in Canada and across the world to help rehabilitate prisoners. For the last ten years, Carl Portman has led a prison chess program in the U.K. that he says has worked wonders on the disposition of convicted felons. “It’s actually perfect for prison,” he told Global News. “Chess is about making good choices.” Portman said that he has received testimonials from countless prisoners over the years who attest to how the game has helped them. One said that instead of committing a crime after being released, he is now going to the chess club. Another said that he now thinks before acting, which prevented him from getting back into the drug trade, while a third said the game helped him reconnect with his son after being released because he knew he played as well. Portman said that chess teaches you to think before acting and to take responsibility for your actions because once you make a move you can’t ...

New York Rangers rally for overtime win in Stadium Series

New York Rangers rally for overtime win in Stadium Series EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- It was a storybook finish for the New York Rangers in their Stadium Series win over the New York Islanders on Sunday. But not necessarily the story they intended to tell. "It wasn't a script we would have written," Rangers coach Peter Laviolette said after their 6-5 overtime victory in front of 79,690 fans at MetLife Stadium in the highest-scoring outdoor game in NHL history. "It was crazy. It was awesome. So many props to our guys after a first period that didn't go the way we wanted at all." The Rangers took an early 1-0 lead but then watched the Islanders score three goals in 3 minutes, 14 seconds, including goals by Bo Horvat and Mathew Barzal 16 seconds apart. Just 1:03 into the second period, the Rangers were down 4-1. Even when they mounted a rally, the Islanders had an answer, and led 5-3 with five minutes left in regulation. But at the final horn, the Rangers skated a...

Navalny’s death is a warning to Putin challengers, activist Bill Browder says

The smell of rotten, boiled eggs stands out in Kateryna’s memory of her six months living at a refugee camp in Berlin. “When you peel them, the smell is horrible,” she said. “The yolk is black.” She has a collection of photos and videos of inedible food on her phone that she says was served to Ukrainian refugees at the camp set up at the former Tegel airport.
